چکیده

Tandem source-channel coding is proven to be optimal by Shannon given unlimited delay and complexity in the coders. Under low delay and low complexity constraints, joint source-channel coding may achieve better performance. Although digital joint source-channel coding has shown a noticeable gain in terms of reconstructed signal quality, coding delay, and complexity, it suffers from the leveling-off effect. However, analog systems do not suffer from the leveling-off effect. In this thesis, we investigate the advantage of analog systems based on the Shannon-Kotel’nikov approach and hybrid digital-analog coding systems, which combine digital and analog schemes to achieve a graceful degradation/improvement over a wide range of channel conditions. First, we propose a low delay and low complexity hybrid digital-analog coding that is able to achieve high (integer) expansion ratios (≥ 3). This is achieved by combining the spiral mapping with multiple stage quantizers. The system is simulated for a 1 : 3 bandwidth expansion and the behavior for a 1 : M (with M an integer≥ 3) system is studied in the low noise level regime. Next, we propose an analog joint source-channel coding system that is able to achieve a low (fractional) expansion ratio between 1 and 2. More precisely, this is an N : M bandwidth expansion system based on combining uncoded transmission and a 1 : 2

A User's Guide to Compressed Sensing for Communications Systems

This survey provides a brief introduction to compressed sensing as well as several major algorithms to solve it and its various applications to communications systems. We firstly review linear simultaneous equations as ill-posed inverse problems, since the idea of compressed sensing could be best understood in the context of the linear equations. Then, we consider the problem of compressed sens...

A Block-Wise random sampling approach: Compressed sensing problem

The focus of this paper is to consider the compressed sensing problem. It is stated that the compressed sensing theory, under certain conditions, helps relax the Nyquist sampling theory and takes smaller samples. One of the important tasks in this theory is to carefully design measurement matrix (sampling operator). Most existing methods in the literature attempt to optimize a randomly initiali...

A Unified Approach to Sparse Signal Processing

A unified view of the area of sparse signal processing is presented in tutorial form by bringing together various fields in which the property of sparsity has been successfully exploited. For each of these fields, various algorithms and techniques, which have been developed to leverage sparsity, are described succinctly. The common potential benefits of significant reduction in sampling rate an...

Source and Channel Coding for Compressed Sensing and Control

Rapid advances in sensor technologies have fueled massive torrents of data streaming across networks. Such large volume of information, indeed, restricts the operational performance of data processing, causing inefficiency in sensing, computation, communication and control. Hence, classical data processing techniques need to be re-analyzed and re-designed prior to be applied to modern networked...

Compressed Sensing and its Applications in UWB Communication Systems

Ultra-wideband (UWB) communication systems can be used as overlay over existing systems due to their large absolute bandwidth and low power spectral density. But realization of UWB systems has been obstructed due to present state of art of A/D converters that are not able to meet the high sampling rate requirement of UWB systems. Compressed sensing appears to be a natural solution to develop sy...
